"Black comedy" or "black humor": baleful, naive, or inept

characters in a fantastic or nightmarish modern world play

out their roles in what Ionesco called a "tragic farce," in which

the events are often simultaneously comic, horrifying, and

absurd. (From “A Glossary of Literature Terms”)

Black humor: In literature, drama, and film, grotesque or

morbid humor used to express the absurdity, insensitivity,

paradox, and cruelty of the modern world. Ordinary

characters or situations are usually exaggerated far beyond

the limits of normal satire or irony. Black humor uses devices

often associated with tragedy and is sometimes equated with

tragic farce. (From Columbia Encyclopedia)

Tragicomedy in late developments: Gotthold Lessing (a German

writer) defined it as a mixture of emotions in which “seriousness

stimulates laughter, and pain pleasure.” Even more commonly,

tragicomedy's affinity with satire and "dark" comedy have

suggested a tragicomic impulse in modern absurdist drama.
